The problem with the Apple Watch is that it typically relies on users to pair the smartwatch with an iPhone. The cellular version of the Apple Watch does reduce its dependence on the iPhone, but when it comes to third-party apps, it’s a bit of a mixed bag as it’s up to the developer to choose to create a standalone app designed for the Apple Watch.
With the official Spotify app, Apple Watch owners can now do more than just pause and skip tracks: custom playlists and Spotify Connect are both at your disposal if you download. For now, the Spotify Apple Watch app does not appear to have a search feature. That means you’ll need to have listened to the song at least once in the app or rely on voice commands via Siri. Previously, Spotify would only serve to turn an Apple Watch into a remote control where users were able to use the watch to control playback as the music streamed on a paired iPhone running the Spotify app. This was still a useful feature, and especially when exercising, but inconvenient in the sense that the two devices needed to be connected. Spotify on the Apple Watch is a bit of a sore spot. The first Apple Watch launched back in in 2015, but it wasn’t until November 2018 that a Spotify app made its way to the popular smartwatch.
The good news for Spotify users is that if you’d rather not have to bring your iPhone with you on your run, you’ll be pleased to learn that the company has since released a standalone app for the Apple Watch. What this means that users will be able to stream music from Spotify through the Apple Watch app directly to their headphones as long as the user has some kind of connection, such as WiFi or cellular data.
According to Spotify, they’ve recently started to roll out this update to its users, so if you haven’t received the update yet, not to worry as it should eventually make its way to you. The company had actually started to test the feature earlier this year, but it looks like they are more or less done and are making it available to more users as we speak.
So if you can appreciate being able to stream your favorite music or podcasts without having to rely on being in proximity to your iPhone, then this is an update that you’ll want to keep an eye out for.

After a couple of months of testing, it appears that Spotify is ready to bring its most important feature to Apple Watch. Users have started reporting the ability to stream Spotify directly on their wearable, a feature that some competitors have offered for a while, without having to stay shackled to their iPhones. Spotify has since confirmed that it is rolling out the new streaming capability.
It has been a couple of years since Spotify introduced its Apple Watch app, but it lacked some features we’ve seen from platforms like Pandora, effectively making the watch a remote control for the iPhone.
Things finally started to change back in September when some Spotify users started seeing a beta feature for streaming Spotify directly on their wrist.
Spotify started quietly rolling out this feature to everyone in recent days as evidenced by a spike in reports from Spotify users who say they can now stream the service on the Apple Watch. Rather than using their iPhone, users can stream podcasts and music on the wearable using WiFi or cellular data.
Users report direct access to their music library and recently played content, according to9to5Mac, but apparently lack the ability to search using the Apple Watch app, meaning Siri must be used to retrieve other content.
